NOTE: This will not work for the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, although those jailbreaks should be coming soon. Also, this will not work on iOS 5.0, so update to 5.0.1 before you try it.

Option 1: Already Jailbroken Tethered

If you already have a tethered jailbreak, just reload your data in Cydia and search for the package “Corona”. Install it and you jailbreak should now be untethered.

Option 2: Not Jailbroken

This will probably be the case for most people, and means that you have not had any jailbreak applied to your device. If this is so, jsut follow the directions below to jailbreak your device untethered.

Step 1: Download the latest version of Redsn0w (0.9.10 beta 1) from here: Mac / PC.

Step 2: Open Redsn0w. You should see this screen:

Step 3: Select “Jailbreak”. You should now be at this screen:

Step 4: Plug your device into the computer and turn it off. Then click “Next >”.

How to Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Semi Untethered – iPhone, iPod, iPad with RedsnOw 0.9.9b9b :

Step 1: Connect your iDevice with your PC via USB, and open iTunes then Restore to iOS 5.0.1 (If you are already running iOS 5.0.1, bypass this step)

Step 2: Start Redsn0w 0.9.9 b9b, and press on “Jailbreak” button

Step 3: Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”.

Step 4: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.

At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will be guided on how to enter DFU mode. Quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Strep 5: Wait until you get iOS 5.0.1  jailbroken in few minutes. Congratulations.

Step 6: Once current Redsn0w jailbreak is still tethered jailbreak, you will be required to connect your iOS device with your computer and run Redsn0w again then choose “Extras” > “Just Boot” and follow instructions (This will help you to fix white Cydia icon problem). You will be required to make this step every time you reboot your device (This will prevent you from stuck-ing on Apple logo)

Step 7: Follow our Previous Guide for “SemiTether” and install the tool to get the semi untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

What’s tethered jailbreak :

Tethered jailbreaks are frustrating because they require a computer connection to boot a jailbroken iOS device. The concept of a tethered jailbreak has been around a long time, but essentially it means this: every time your iPhone or iPod touch reboots or the battery dies, you have to connect (tether) your iOS device back to your computer so that the hardware can boot with the aid of the jailbreak application.

What’s untethered jailbreak :

An untethered jailbreak is the preferred jailbreak because it requires no connection to your computer except for the initial jailbreaking process. You can reboot your iPhone or iPod touch as much as you want without having to tether it to your computer to boot. If the battery dies on a device that has an untethered jailbreak, it’s no big deal you just charge it again and it will boot as usual.

Trial B:
Step 1: Once you have launched Cydia, tap on “Manage”.
Step 2: There you would be able to see an Installed list and an option, “Cydia Installer”.
Step 3: Select it and then modify it by tapping on the “Modify” button.
Step 4: In the final step, all you have to do is to tap the “Re-install button”, and the job is done.

If Trial A and B didn’t fix white cydia icon issue you can follow Trial C.

Trial C:
Step 1: When you launch Cydia, proceed to the “Changes” tab and hit the “Refresh” button. This would prompt Cydia to update all necessary packages.
Step 2: You would get an option demanding an “Essential Upgrade”. In a few minutes duration, all the update procedure would be completed.
Step 3: Once you have confirmed the update, all necessary changes would be completed.When this is completed, close Cydia and your job is done.

If this guide doesn’t work out , restore your iPhone to iOS 5.0.1 and then re-jailbreak using Redsn0w 0.9.9b8.

Why to downgrade iPad 2 from 5.0.1 / 5.0 to 4.3.3 ?

As most of you know that the only jailbreakable firmware on iPad 2 is iOS 4.3.3 which has been jailbroken with untethered jailbreak JailbreakMe 3.0 few months ago. Many of iPad 2 users have accidentally upgraded their devices to 4.3.5 / 5.0 or 5.0.1 which broke the untethered jailbreak. Notcom, has successfully found a trick that able to make the iPad 2 3G can be downgraded via a custom 4.3.3 firmware to re-enjoy the untethered iPad 2 jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3.

What TinyCFW is:

How to downgrade 5.0.1 / 5.0 to 4.3.3 on iPad 2 3G (GSM / CDMA) :

Step 1: Start TinyCFW application (double click on the jar or run the .exe file). You must have java and at least 2.5gb ram.

Step 2: Once the window comes up, click the top button and choose iOS 4.3.3 ipsw.

Step 3: Click the second button. The app will scan it and tell you the firmware and baseband versions in the ipsw you selected (iOS 4.3.3) and the firmware and baseband versions that will be in the target ipsw

Step 4: Click ‘Save Target IPSW’. This will take a minute or two and when it is finished, you will have a file named:

<your original ipsw name> .bbupdate.ipsw.

Step 5: Now we will start restoring iPad 2 to the new custom firmware created above, we will use iTunes and TinyUmbrella to do this. Now open Tinyumbrella and make iTunes look at Cydia’s Server in the “Advanced” options.

Step 6: Plug your iPad 2 and switch it off

Step 7: Put your iPad 2 in DFU mode (If you don’t know how to put your device in DFU mode)

Step 8: Select the custom firmware you created above manually to restore your iPad 2. (Shift on Windows, and option on a Mac)

iTunes will till you that it will talk to Apple servers but actually it will talk to Cydia servers.

Now you have successfully downgrade iOS 5.0.1 / 5.0 to 4.3.3 iPad 2 3G.

Important Note: You MUST have a jailbroken iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.0.1 with preserving the unlockable baseband. In the meantime sn0wbreeze is the only jailbreak tool that supports iOS 5.0.1. Current version of Redsn0w, can only jailbreak devices but still does not support preserving baseband for 5.0.1. (You can download Sn0wbreeze from here)

How to unlock iPhone 4 / 3GS 5.0.1 with Ultrasn0w Fixer :

Step 1: First thing is to open up  Cydia from your iDevice.

Step 2: Go for the ‘manage’ >‘sources’ > ‘edit’. Finally to ‘add’, here you paste in the URL:

Step 3: Now you get to the source and you will find two options for ultrasn0w unlocks. One is for iPhone 4 while the other would be for iPhone 3GS.

Step 4: You must opt for the option that best suits you and install it. A reboot would get your application working.

Our Recommendations : we highly recommend to wait until the iPhone Dev-team update ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 4 / 3GS on iOS 5.0.1 as it will be more stable and free of bugs.

1. Add the correct repo to Cydia. This can be accomplished by going to the Manage -> Sources -> Edit -> Add and typing in “http://www.cydia.be”

2. Go to the “Search” tab and type “H1Siri”

3. Install the package and continue as prompted.

4. Go to setting -> General -> Siri and switch it “On”

5. Hold the home button and siri will appear.

With this software you can develop applications that run on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5.1. You can also test your applications using the included iOS Simulator, which supports iOS 5.1. Accounts

When creating an iCloud account, you can use any Apple ID as long as it is a full email address and not a MobileMe account. If you have a MobileMe account, you can move that account to iCloud. You can find more information at: http://me.com/move

APIs

• The NSNetService class and CFNetService APIs do not include P2P interfaces by default. To browse, register, or resolve services over P2P interfaces, an application needs to use the Bonjour DNSService*() APIs noted below.
• Setting the interfaceIndex parameter to kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexAny in the following API’s will not include P2P interfaces by default. To include P2P interfaces, you must now set thekDNSServiceFlagsIncludeP2P flag when using kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexAny or set the interfaceIndex to kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexP2P. The affected APIs are:
  • DNSServiceBrowse
  • DNSServiceRegister
  • DNSServiceResolve
  • DNSServiceRegisterRecord

GameKit

App Icons and Profile Photos are not loading in apps using Game Center.

iCloud Storage

• Provisioning profiles must be enabled for iCloud in the iOS Provisioning Portal. You can enable a provisioning profile for iCloud by navigating to the App ID section of the iOS Provisioning Portal and configuring your App ID for iCloud. After enabling the App ID for iCloud, regenerate your provisioning profiles to enable them for iCloud.
• The setSortDescriptors: method of NSMetadataQuery is not supported.
• In iOS 5, files that are protected via Data Protection cannot be used with iCloud Storage APIs.
• File names are case-insensitive in Mac OS X but case-sensitive in iOS. This can lead to problems when sharing files between the two using iCloud. You should take steps on iOS to avoid creating files whose names differ only by case.

Movie Player

Starting in iOS 5.0, in order to facilitate finer-grained playback control, a movie player is not automatically prepared to play upon creation. Call the prepareToPlay method to prepare the movie player. For more information, see MPMoviePlayerController Class Reference.

Music Player

Using shake-to-shuffle causes Music app to freeze and playback to stop.

Security

In iOS 5, the signing of certificates with MD5 signatures is not supported. Please ensure that certificates use signature algorithms based on SHA1 or SHA2.

Apple has just released iOS 5.0.1 to the public, bringing fixes for battery life issues introduced with iOS 5. The release also brings several other enhancements including multitasking gestures for the original iPad.

This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud

The build number on the public release is 9A405, an increment of one build over the beta 2 build seeded to developers last Friday.

iOS 5.0.1 is available for iPhone 4S, iphone 4, and 3GS, iPod touch (third- and fourth-generation), and all iPad models. The update is available for download via iTunes, but is not yet showing up as an over-the-air update for direct download to iOS devices.

Update: Several European users are now reporting that iOS 5.0.1 is available as a 44.6 MB over-the-air update on their devices, but it still does not appear to be showing up on devices in the United States.

Update 4: CNET notes that iOS 5.0.1 addresses the security vulnerability disclosed by prominent security researcher Charlie Miller earlier this week.
